Biography

Dr Janet Yuen-Ha Wong, RN, PhD, is an Assistant Professor at the School of Nursing of the University of Hong Kong. She received her PhD at the University of Hong Kong. During her PhD study, she had been awarded Fulbright visiting scholarship (2010–2011) affiliated with University of Virginia in the United States. She joined the University of Hong Kong as a Clinical Instructor in 2007 and was promoted to Assistant Professor in 2011.

Her principal research area lies in intimate partner violence (IPV). She primarily focuses on determining health impact of IPV survivors. She particularly interested in brain-body interactions linking physical, neurological, psychological, and social factors to health and disease vulnerability in abused women. Some of her work focuses on advances in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and heart rate variability (HRV) integrated with the field of biobehavioural medicine and stress physiology to understand the impact of IPV on abused women’s health.  To help the women in understanding the association among abuse, stress and health, she delivered a number of invited talks in the communities.  She is also appointed as Advisory Board Member of Hong Kong Single Parents Association.

She is also committed to address the needs of college students in dating abusive relationships and in engaging risky sexual behaviours. Therefore, she conducted quantitative surveys and qualitative interviews with IPV perpetrators and victims in college to understand their IPV experiences. She provided innovative training workshops at HKU CEDARS to educate college students as ambassadors to help peers in dating abuse and violence. She also developed a Chinese website Dating Café to educate youth about the awareness of dating violence, sexual consent and risky sexual behaviours.
