Biography

Professor Agnes Tiwari is currently Head of School of Nursing, The University of Hong Kong.  As a nurse researcher with a particular interest in violence prevention, she is also the Director of Research of the School of Nursing.

Born in Hong Kong, she studied nursing in the UK where she practiced and taught in urban and rural settings.  She was Head of Pre-registration Nursing Programmes at St. George’s Hospital School of Nursing before returning to Hong Kong in 1993 to join the tertiary education sector.

Her passion in research matches her enthusiasm in teaching and learning.  A firm believer in student-centred learning, her influential work on portfolio assessment and constructive alignment has been recognized by the award of the Faculty Teaching Medal and the University Outstanding Teaching Award.

Her research focuses on the prevention of and intervention for interpersonal violence.  In particular, she modified models of empowerment intervention for abused Chinese women in prenatal and community settings, and examined their effects on violence reduction and health improvement using robust testing methods.  Her studies on violence prevention were cited by the Institute of Medicine (IOM) Forum on Global Violence Prevention as key evidence to inform policy, practice and research.As adviser to the World Health Organization (WHO), her research has informed the development of the WHOGuidelines on Health Sector Response to Violence against Women (under construction).

Based on her work in secondary prevention of interpersonal violence, she has further developed models of primary prevention in the form of Positive Fathering, Positive Parenting, and Becoming Parents, with an emphasis on engaging men as key players in promoting harmony in family relationships.

More recently, intrigued by the adverse impact of intimate partner violence (IPV) on survivor’s health, even after the violence has ended, she has team up with Professor George Tsao and begun to investigate the biological mechanisms underlying the relationships among IPV, chronic psychological stress, and adverse health outcomes.  A pilot study on telomere shortening in abused Chinese women has confirmed that it is feasible to measure both the average and shortest telomere lengths using quantitative fluorescence in-situ hybridization (Q-FISH).

Committed to the belief that intervention for abused Chinese women should be culturally appropriate and that outcome measures should include both biomarkers and psycho-social self-reports, she has just started a randomized wait-list controlled trial to evaluate the effect of a 6-month Qigong intervention on 240 abused Chinese women’s telomerase activity and psychological stress.

In recognition of her achievements in cultural adaptation and validation of instruments for screening IPV, detectionof impact of IPV on survivor’s health, and evaluation of advocacy interventions, she has been:

  • invited by the WHO asTemporary Advisor for the development of policy and clinical guidelines for responding to violence against women (2009, 2011);
  • invited by the IOM as speaker at the IOM’s Forum on Global Violence Prevention (2011);
  • awarded the Women of Influence Award (American Chamber of Commerce, 2011), Award for Research Excellence ( Nursing Network on Violence Against Women International, 2011), and Research Output Prize (HKU, 2012);
  • elected as Fellow of the American Academy of Nursing (2010); and
  • elected to the Board of Directors of the Academy on Violence and Abuse (2013).
