Biography

Dr Daniel Y.T. Fong is currently an Associate Professor at the School of Nursing of The University of Hong Kong. He received his degrees of B.Sc.(1st Hons) in Mathematics and MPhil in Statistics from The University of Hong Kong. He then obtained his Ph.D. in Statistics from the University of Waterloo, Canada. Dr Fong is an experienced biostatistician in health research with over 20 years of experience in clinical trials and statistical consulting. Specifically, he focuses on the application of the best available methods to scientific research in health-related fields, and to develop novel methodologies that could improve the application.

Dr Fong’s main research themes are Health Impact of Environmental Noise (HIEN), Adolescent Idiopathic Scoliosis (AIS) and Patient Reported Outcomes (PRO). All require use of proper and sometimes innovative statistical methods. To date, over 220 papers have been published or accepted in international peer-reviewed journals under the themes of HIEN, AIS, and PRO, including biostatistical methods development and multi-disciplinary research. In particular, our work on HIEN has confirmed that the emerging treatment target of non-restorative sleep is associated with one’s tolerance to noise, and has also used innovative approach that facilitates the study of noise impact on health. Moreover, our AIS research work has provided the highest grade of evidence on a long controversy of scoliosis screening that has influenced the current recommendations of school scoliosis screening. In addition, we have shown how dietary change may help improve clinical outcomes including quality of life, and ensured reliable and valid PRO tools are being used in practice, which include but not limited to the Weinstein Sensitivity Scale, Non-restorative Sleep Scale, SF-12, Chinese Breast Cancer Screen, and Functional Living Index - Cancer.

In 2014, Dr Fong internationalized the Hong Kong Society for Quality of Life to the World Association for Chinese Quality of Life (WACQOL) and became the founding President. He is also co-Chairing the Chinese PRO SIG in the International Society for Quality of Life Research (ISOQOL). He is also currently appointed as an Associate Editor of the journal of Quality of Life Research, Scientific Reports, and Pharmaceutical Statistics.
