Biography
The long-term strategic goal of my research is to improve the outcomes of liver transplantation by reducing the graft injury through integrated basic, clinical and translational studies. I have developed a series of novel animal models to mimic liver graft injury and cancer recurrence. I am first to establish a rat orthotopic liver transplantation model using small-for-size graft in Hong Kong. These models have been extensively introduced into the investigation of liver transplantation. For example, the correlation between transient portal hypertension resulted from excessive portal flow and hepatic sinusoidal damage of small-for-size liver graft was first revealed in animal model we established and the finding was subsequently validated in a series of our clinical studies. The further studies for the mechanism of graft injury and novel treatments were also conducted in animal models we established. We are first to report the significance of small-for-size liver graft injury on tumor recurrence after transplantation in the world and further to explore the molecular mechanisms of inflammatory response in acute phase and tumor invasiveness in late phase. We are also first to uncover the precise mechanism of marginal liver graft injury in our novel rat model of liver transplantation using small-for-size fatty grafts. In parallel, I have focused on the molecular mechanisms involved inflammation and cancer progression, together with the development of novel therapies for cancer metastasis. In addition, I have also established the research platform for in vivo small animal imaging modalities, which are widely applied in various research fields in the Faculty.
I am currently the Regional Associate Editor (Asia) of Transplantation and Associate Editor of Liver Transplantation. I am also the member of the Basic Science Committee of Liver Transplantation Society (ILTS) as well as The Transplantation Society (TTS), Chairperson of ILTS Scholarship Committee, member of ILTS Education Committee, Founder member of Women Leaders in Transplantation (WLIL), International Mentor of WLIL and a Key Opinion Leader of TTS. I have published more than 100 original articles in international journals with H index 29 (total citation >3900). I and my research team have obtained more than 27 international awards including numerous “Rising Star Awards”, “Young Investigator Awards” in annual congress of ILTS, and “Mentee-Mentor Basic Science Awards” In TTS meetings over the past 7 years.
