Conference Paper: Narrative discourse in Cantonese speakers: Norms of micro- and marco-structural variables

TitleNarrative discourse in Cantonese speakers: Norms of micro- and marco-structural variables
Authors
Issue Date15-Nov-2023
Abstract

Discourse is one of the cornerstones in everyday communication. Any adverse changes in discourse ability would affect the quality of life. Clinically, documentation of discourse has gained increasing importance in reviewing and planning of future treatment for people with neurogenic communication disorders. A lack of comprehensive reference data of narrative discourse production in Cantonese, however, has prohibited objective reviews and treatment formulations in daily clinical settings. This study aimed to develop and present the norm data of the microstructural and macrostructural variables for two narrative stories in the Chinese culture: “The Boy Cried Wolf” and “Tortoise and Hare”, chosen from Cantonese Aphasia Bank. The discourse performance among neurotypical participants were compared between the two stories, and across different age groups.
