| Abstract | Over the past decade, a cohort of writers born and raised during the reform era has emerged as a significant force in Chinese literature, warranting attention. This thesis reveals that their works represent a unique blend of geographical particularity (locality), historical consciousness (temporality), and subjective becoming (self). To explore this fusion further, an interpretive framework is introduced using the three reconceptualized terms: “young writers” (born in late 70s, 80s, and early 90s), “long 1990s” (extending into the early 21st century), and “locality.” This framework is then applied to analyze three representative groups of writers. First, the “New Northeast Writers Group,” featuring Shuang Xuetao and Ban Yu, is discussed. Contrary to previous readings focusing on parental trauma during state-owned enterprise reforms in their works, this study emphasizes the young writers’ experiences in the transformative long 1990s. Next, the “New Beijing Writers Group” is explored, concentrating on the portrayal of Beijing as a tangible entity rather than an emblematic political-economic signifier. The works of Shi Yifeng and Xu Zechen offer insights into various facets of Beijing, reflecting the emotional struggles, living challenges, and global outlook of the younger generation. Lastly, the study delves into “New Southern Writing,” examining the works about the Pearl River Delta and Teo-swa regions of Guangdong by Lin Zhao, Lin Peiyuan, Chen Qiufan, and other writers. This section highlights the influence of the “New South” concept on Chinese modernity, while also noting the aesthetic heterogeneity in “New Southern Writing.” By comparing these regional styles, the study concludes that the young writers’ distinct voices are intertwined with the historical context of the “New South.” In summary, the thesis explores writings spanning from north to south, showcasing the multi-dimensional approach of young writers capturing China’s “long 1990s” and their individual perspectives on the country’s societal realities. |
