Abstract

Positive psychology is well-suited to advance the study of harmony, a universally valued construct central to wellbeing and flourishing. Despite its cultural variations, harmony holds considerable importance yet underexplored and underrecognized within the science of wellbeing. This paper introduces a renewed conceptualization of harmony, drawing from theoretical, empirical, and cultural perspectives in psychology and related disciplines. A Unified Harmony Framework is proposed, encompassing coexistence, coherence, and continuity (CoCoCon) at intrapersonal (Me Harmony), interpersonal (We Harmony), and environmental (Eco Harmony) levels. Harmony is defined as respectful coexistence, resonant coherence, and adaptive continuity, emerging from the dynamic integration of various elements within an individual, in relationships with others, and in connection with the environment. This Unified Harmony Framework aims to establish a conceptual foundation for understanding how harmony contributes to wellbeing across various domains. It seeks to inspire new empirical research, guide the development of measurement scales and interventions, and explore how harmony fosters individual, collective, and planetary flourishing.
