Abstract

In his "Phenomenology of Eros," Levinas addresses the relationships between men and women, fathers and sons, and brothers and sisters. This work has been the subject of considerable attention in Chinese academic circles. The resurgence of Confucian thought and the growing influence of phenomenology in China have given rise to a new wave of reflection on Levinas' "Phenomenology of Eros." Levinas places significant emphasis on the "otherness" of the other, yet this may be perceived as a form of violence against the subject. The critique of Levinas' phenomenology by Confucian philosophy raises the question of whether it is possible to develop a phenomenology of warmth that simultaneously considers the distinctiveness of both the subject and the other, while also fostering an atmosphere of intimacy. This article responds to this critique of Confucian philosophy and examines the potential for a phenomenology of warmth, beginning with an examination of the distinction between motherhood and femininity.
