Abstract

<p>Over the past several decades, machine learning has been used in many areas—including education. In this article, we generally describe artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) and discuss how they relate to one another using everyday examples. Next, we zoom in on ML in terms of its definition, some well-known approaches, its historical roots, and uses in education. We then illustrate how ML can aid instructors and students relative to teaching and learning and present some ideas regarding the future of ML in education. We conclude with some important concerns related to ML applications in education moving forward.</p>
