Book Chapter: Transforming Arithmetic Through Digital Resources

TitleTransforming Arithmetic Through Digital Resources
Authors
Issue Date11-Oct-2023
Abstract

This chapter discusses how digital resources can transform the teaching and learning of arithmetic from embodied cognition and new materialist perspectives. Focusing on and illustrating with the digital tools of TouchCounts and Scratch, we first discuss the material practices of digital tools and how these practices enable students’ multimodal expressions and sympathetic learning experiences in arithmetic. Then, we focus on a chosen topic of skip counting to further exemplify how digital resources transform the very concept that students are to learn as well as how they learn, including the order and configuration of which to learn. We conclude the chapter by illuminating the conceptual, curricular, and pedagogical transformation of arithmetic teaching and learning as afforded by digital resources.
