| Abstract | The global spread of English has contributed to the wide use of English-medium instruction (EMI). This chapter critically analyzes the literature on using EMI in East Asian contexts, specifically in Taiwan. EMI in Taiwan is still in its infancy, as compared to some postcolonial contexts in Asia. To date, the results obtained in most studies on EMI in Taiwan have hardly been analyzed with a critical lens, without which these studies do not contribute to unmasking the ideological underpinnings of EMI policies and practices. Thus, we conducted a critical inquiry into important questions regarding why, how, and for whom EMI is adopted by examining the existing literature on EMI in Taiwan. |
