Abstract |
This study investigated the relations between parental stress, authoritarian parenting style and child
inhibitory control of children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). Sixty-nine Chinese parents (62 female and
7 male) of children with ASD aged 4-12 (M = 6.57; SD = 2.14; 5 male and 14 female) studying in preschools or
primary schools in Hong Kong were invited to complete an online questionnaire. Results suggested that parental
stress and authoritarian style were associated with child inhibitory control of children with ASD. Moreover, the
authoritarian parenting style partially mediates the relations between parental stress and inhibitory control of
children with ASD. In conclusion, parental stress and authoritarian parenting style may impact the inhibitory
control of children with ASD. In other words, the study provides insight into interventions supporting parents of
children with ASD to improve their children’s inhibitory control.
