AbstractThis study aims at examining the idea of “Core Cross Language Frame” and investigating how many Core Cross Language Frames are there in languages. Enlightened by frame linguistics developed by Charles Fillmore, current lexical semantics considers words as part of the conceptual frame they belong. Meaning is evoked from the whole and part relationships between words and the frame. Words with the same frame are linked to each other and form network which is the structure of lexicons. Among the 1200+ conceptual frames in English identified by FrameNet, Core Conceptual Frames, which is defined as prime and universal frames across languages, would be a new and front-edge theoretical construct for language learning. The study analyzes 392 core word lists derived from 178 languages. Core cross language frames can be identified from the 3908 words in the word lists. The study will also discuss how the result of core cross language frame can be used in language learning curriculum design.
