AbstractDeriving from deep historical roots, enclave urbanism in contemporary China has been evolving into various forms and connotations. In this talk, I expand the scholarship of enclave urbanism along two dimensions. I first present a recent study on a special form of migrant enclave nested within resettlement housing estates in a special economic zone. The second half of the talk examines the changing perception of gated communities among Chinese citizens amidst the Covid-19 outbreak and discusses its long-term implications on residential segregation and exclusion.
