AbstractThe purpose of this study was to examine the effectiveness of interventions, reading comprehension and schematic-based strategy trainings, on enhancing the performance of math word problems (MWP) solving among ethnic minority (EM) primary school students in Hong Kong. It aimed to discover if it is the language barrier or the difficulty in integrating math concepts struggle the EM students more. While the reading group practiced on reading comprehension, the math group practiced on integrating information of MWP and math concepts through schema. The accuracy on solving fraction-related math word problems and the quality of visual representations were measured in EM primary 5 and 6 students of the 2 intervention groups before and after the 8 intervention sessions within a two-month period. Results indicated that the accuracy of math word problems was significantly improved in the reading group, while the quality of visual representation was significantly improved in the math group.
