AbstractThis talk focuses on my projects to build a website – Resources for Interpreting, and a bilingual Chinese-English glossary App – Newssary, both dedicated to the practice, learning, teaching and research of interpreting. Funded by two Knowledge Exchange (KE) Impact Scheme grants of The University of Hong Kong (HKU), the website hosts a wealth of information and learning resources about interpreting. More significantly, this website features a Chinese-English bilingual glossary database including buzzwords trending in the news like “Brexit”, “Grexit” and Burkini as well as their Chinese equivalents, many of which have not yet made it to the dictionary. The building of the bilingual glossary database is the product of relentless efforts over many years. The database contains words related to a variety of topics from business, politics, health, law and order, to culture, social media and new technology. The database, furnished with an intelligent search engine, is ever growing as more terms are collected and added to it on a regular basis. The creation of the mobile App based on this glossary database, funded by another KE grant of HKU, further enhances user experience, with its new interface and additional functions and features such as notification of new entries, bookmarking and word quizzes. This talk explains the background of the creation of the website and the mobile App, the engagement process and how the website and the newly launched mobile App provide a useful toolkit not just for interpreters, but for everyone who wishes to better their bilingual knowledge in Chinese and English.
