Abstract | Whether theoretical or empirical, studies considering the links between retirement and health need to be precise about the meaning of both terms. Retirement experiences are now diverse and may have positive or negative effects on various different domains of health. Strong empirical correlations have been established in many settings but the findings of more robust causal analyses seeking to test the effect of retirement on future health are weaker and somewhat mixed. Recent and upcoming policy reform, coupled with ongoing interdisciplinary data collection and harmonization activities, mean that the potential for future research in this area is great. |
