Abstract | This presentation will begin by going over some of the unsolved problems in the field of educational measurement that Howard Wainer identified over twenty-five years ago. Given the current state of the field, the presentation will discuss which of the problems have been solved and which have remained unsolved, specifically in the context of formative assessment. The presentation will then focus on a particular direction that educational researchers and practitioners are currently pursuing – using educational measurement to inform instruction and learning. It will discuss some of the issues that need to be resolved for a coherent framework for such an application to be effective. An overview of cognitive diagnosis modeling, which will occupy a critical role in the framework, as well as some recent developments in the area, will also be provided. |
