AbstractIntegrating Ego Depletion (Muraven & Baumeister, 2000) and Self-Determination Theory (Deci & Ryan, 1985), we employed a multi-source experience sampling methodology to test the effects of a critical boundary condition, personal control over break activity choices, on the relation between lunch break activities and end of workday fatigue. We found relaxing lunch activities were associated with lower levels of co-worker rated fatigue, work-related activities were associated with higher fatigue, and contrary to previous predictions social activities were also associated with higher fatigue. Moreover, control moderated the effects of break activities on end of workday fatigue, demonstrating the depleting effects of not having personal control over the use of oneï¿1/2s personal time. Contributions to theory and practice are discussed.
