AbstractThis study examines a unique perspective on partnerships and shares insight into ways teacher educators can deepen teacher candidate learning about culture, community, and city by engaging urban communities as sites of learning afforded by the partnership. In the context of 19 teaching residents, all preparing to teach in high need, urban schools, we ask: 1) What personal, professional, and relational knowledge about “urban/city” do residents bring to their explorations of urban communities? 2) What personal, professional, and relational knowledge about “urban/city” do residents gain from their explorations of urban communities? 3) In what ways can diverse residents’ reflections and critical examinations of urban communities inform teacher preparation curricula?
