AbstractThough historically significant in the United States, multicultural education is a relatively new field in East Asia. This research chooses Hong Kong to provide an Asian perspective on multicultural education. In particular, we examine how curricula reflects multicultural themes in Hong Kong history education. This paper examines History and Chinese History textbooks to assess whether and how their contents align with the stated educational aim of aiding students to respect pluralism of cultures and views and construct diverse identities. The main objectives are to analyze how ethnic minorities in Hong Kong are represented in the textbooks, and how textbooks have played a role to construct students’ identity and sense of themselves and others.
