AbstractPredicting the time to corrosion induced crack of surface cover is important for assessing the service life of reinforced concrete (RC) structures. However, existing analytical models cannot accurately predict it as the deformation of rust is significantly underestimated. This study aims to investigate the expansive behavior of rust produced in RC structures by an accelerated corrosion test. The expansion displacement of rust is captured by digital image correlation. By using the displacement compatibility condition on the concrete/steel interface, the deformation of rust is determined. And eventually, the Young’s modulus of rust is back calculated.
