Abstract | Perhaps known for the imaging of developing fetuses inside the mother's womb, ultrasound has emerged as a non-invasive imaging modality that can provide images of structural anatomy and blood flow in real time. In this part of the workshop, we shall discuss how the ultrasound images seen in clinics are actually being generated from an engineering science perspective. Concepts such as imaging modes, physical origin of imaging signals, and wave physics will be described. After attending this session, participants should be better prepared to read into the details of ultrasound imaging periodicals that have strong technical flavour. It also serves to set the stage for the next workshop session on a special ultrasound imaging mode commonly referred to as IVUS (intravascular ultrasound). |
