Abstract | Rapid expansion of Chinese higher education has meant more opportunity but a drop in the proportion of poor rural and ethnic minority student, especially in top-tier universities. Research shows that those from major cities, higher income families with better educated parents in high status occupations are more likely to enter better universities. This study goes one step further by considering the influence of culture, specifically three types of concerted cultivation. We collected a stratified sample of data from 2,586 senior high school students nested in 18 schools of 10 counties along with entrance examination scores. The results highlight the growing importance of concerted cultivation strategies through parental participation in home, school, and community.Copyright©2017 All Academic, Inc. |
