Abstract | This paper presents in detail a long-term shrinkage measuring method using fibre-optic sensor and reports an experimental study of the effectiveness of shrinkage reducing agents (SRAs) in reducing the shrinkage of Hong Kong concrete in 3.5 years. The concrete mixes tested were typical local concrete mixes of grade designation varying from grade 35 to 45, with water cementitious materials ratio varying between 0.39 and 0.48, and pulverised fuel ash (PFA) dosage set at 0% or 25%. The test results confirmed the effectiveness of SRAs in reducing the ultimate shrinkage strain of concrete. The results also revealed that the effectiveness of SRAs in reducing shrinkage would diminish with time, and that SRAs could prolong the shrinkage half-time of concrete. |
