AbstractMembrane bioreactor (MBR) is an emerging and promising biological wastewater treatment process. However, it is difficult to achieve sufficient nitrogen removal with the conventional MBR because of its aerobic condition. In the present experiment study, a hybrid system has been developed for biological nitrogen removal through nitrification-denitrification. The system includes an aerobic tank and an anoxic tank with an intermediate sludge settler in connection to an MBR. Submerged in the MBR is a 0.4 μm polyethylene hollow-fiber membrane module (0.03 m2, Mitsubishi Rayon). The laboratory system has a total working volume of 6.5 L and receives a glucose-based synthetic wastewater influent. The experimental results demonstrate ...
