AbstractINTRODUCTION: E-learning has had a global impact, and the potential exists to implement good practice in higher education, where integrating learning technology will provide student-centred, resource-based and communicative learning (Jerram, 2006). Using either the wired or the wireless networked environment increases the opportunities to reinforce students’ intellectuality (Hodgson et al., 2001). As the impact of technology on university teaching will be unavoidable in the twenty-first century, preparing future academics to embrace good use of learning technologies to enhance their teaching is becoming critical. Learning technology embraces a wide range of applications, one of which, web-based platforms, has extended the human–computer interface with the availability of electronic communications. An electronic mode of learning (e-learning) has become increasingly important in universities across the world: more and more have switched from traditional oncampus programmes to hybrid courses that feature web enhancement and even to fully webbased courses.
