Professor Jones, Emma Letizia
I am an architect, architectural historian and Assistant Professor in the History of Architecture at the University of Hong Kong. I research the history of architectural representation and its impact on architectural production during the formative and continuing years of the industrial revolution. I primarily look at how developments in architectural media impacted upon the European architecture and building trades and their global relations during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. I am currently examining how developments in architectural publishing in this period in Europe, including the dissemination of practical building publications like building manuals and trade catalogues, resulted in the globalisation of the building industries – particularly in China and Oceania. My forthcoming book with MIT Press, The Illusionist: Schinkel and the Drawing in Nineteenth century Prussia, will provide a new account of how the processes and products of architectural drawing shaped the approach of the early nineteenth century Prussian architect Karl Friedrich Schinkel and his contemporaries toward architecture as the production of illusions.
