Title:
Assistant Lecturer
Former Coordinator of Medical Humanities Programme in MBBS Year 4 (2021 - 2023)
Former Programme Manager of Medical Humanities Curriculum (2014 - 2021)

Short Biography:

Samson joined the Medical Ethics and Humanities Unit (MEHU) in 2014 as a Teaching Assistant to the late Professor L.C. Chan, the Founding Co-Director of MEHU. From 2014 to 2021, he served as the sole Programme Manager for the Medical Humanities (MH) curriculum, playing a pivotal role in planning and launching the initial cohorts of the MH curriculum within the University's MBBS program. He holds a BA (HKU), MSocSc (HKU), FAcadMEd, FHEA, and a Certification in Thanatology (CT®) from the Association of Death Education and Counselling (ADEC) in the U.S.

Over his 11 years of service at MEHU, Samson has spearheaded multiple innovative teaching projects in medical humanities. During the COVID-19 pandemic (2020–2023), he recognized a critical need to address the inadvertent spread of ageism in society. As a result, he led a project to adapt photo-elicitation techniques to enhance medical students’ awareness of age-related implicit biases in healthcare and to foster a professional interest in working with older patients. For this advocacy, Samson received the Young Scholar Merit Award at the National University of Singapore’s Asia Pacific Medical Education Conference in 2022 and was shortlisted as a finalist for the 2023 QS Reimagine Education Award in the "Nurturing Values and Ethics" category.

One of Samson’s signature pedagogical approaches involved introducing immersive video gameplay to help medical students understand the complex emotional experiences faced by family caregivers in end-of-life care. This initiative aimed to enhance healthcare professionals’ self-competence in dealing with death and dying. His pioneering work in HKUMed’s medical humanities curriculum earned him recognition from both Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) and Times Higher Education (THE). In 2025, he was honored as the inaugural winner of the "Most Innovative Teacher of the Year" Award presented in Asia by THE. That same year, he received the Gold Award in the "Nurturing Wellbeing and Purpose" category at the QS Reimagine Education Awards, achieving world-class recognition for his unique medical humanities teaching practice after undergoing four rigorous evaluation rounds conducted by a panel of 1,300 international higher education experts.

Currently, Samson stands out as one of the few educators in Hong Kong accredited as a Fellow (FAcadMEd) of the Academy of Medical Educators (AoME) in the U.K. Additionally, he serves as a mentor in HKU’s Postgraduate Certificate in Academic Practice (PCAP) program.
