Biography
Ivan Valin is a landscape designerwith more than seven years of experience practicing landscape, urban, and architectural design. He holds a Master of Landscape Architecture and a Master of Architecture from the University of California in Berkeley and a Bachelor of Science in Architecture from the University of Virginia. He currently holds the position of Team Leader in AECOM’s HongKong Landscape Architecture
studio. Ivan’s most recent experience has been concentrated in Asia, with major projects in Hong Kong, China and India underway. Hiswork often addresses ideas of process, “open” ecologies, and hydrology. In addition to his role as a project director and team leader, he has initiated a research agenda within the studio and has led an internship program each summer.

Ivan is also currently engaged with HKU as an adjunct assistant professor in the Department of Urban Planning and Designwhere he teaches a technology and thesis course. These courses have built on core teaching experience Ivan received as a graduate student instructor and then lecturer at the University of California, Berkeley.

Ivan is motivated by the paradigmatic shits in environmental and urban development underway in Asia to question the relevance of newly-minted urban theories and landscape practices in general. He is particularly interested on the notion of edge (and its shifting composition of the ‘urban’ and the ‘ecological’) in the context of the ever-expanding, edgeless conurbations increasingly common in the world’s emerging economies.
