Biography

Gerard A. Postiglione is Honorary Professor, Coordinator of the Consortium for Research on Higher Education in Asia. He has been Chair Professor in Higher Education, Associate Dean for Research, Head of the Division of Policy, Administration and Social Science in the Faculty of Education, The University of Hong Kong.
 
His scholarship includes 20 books and over 150 articles and chapters. His books include: Mass Higher Education in East AsiaCrossing Borders in East Asian Higher Education, Asian Higher Education, and China’s Rural Education in Transition. He is editor of Chinese Education and Society, and four book series about education in China. He is a member of 24 editorial boards.
 
In 2006, he received the Outstanding Research Supervisor Award. In 2011, he received the Best Book Award from the US Comparative and International Education Society. In 2014, he received the Humanities and Social Science Prestigious Fellowship. In 2015, he received a Lifetime Contribution Award by the US Comparative and International Education Society for Studies in Higher Education. In 2016, he was inducted as a Fellow of the American Educational Research Association for his contribution to research. In 2016, his autobiography was published in Leaders in the Sociology of Education. In 2017, he received a second Best Book Award. In 2017, his research works were collected and published by Routledge Press. In 2019, he co-received the China National Education Outstanding Achievement Award in Empirical Research.
 
He has been a consultant to the Asian Development Bank, Department for International Development (UK), Institute of International Education (US), International Development Research Center (CA), Organization of Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), United Nations Development Programme, United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization, World Bank, and other international agencies. He also advised international foundations, including the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching on the international academic profession. He was senior consultant to the Ford Foundation on educational reform and cultural vitality in China. His policy reports have been received by China’s National Reform and Development Commission, State Education Commission and Ministry of Education.
 
In the media, he appeared on CNN and China’s CCTV, wrote for The New York Times and The Washington Post, and has been quoted in The New York TimesWall Street Journal, and other publications such as ScienceBloomberg BusinessWeekShanghai Education, and he has written for Hong Kong’s English and Chinese language press. He was invited to brief the Office of the Secretary of the US Department of Education and is a member of the National Committee on US-China Relations. He was invited and attended functions at The White House Rose Garden and China’s Great Hall of the People.
 
He held sabbatical appointments at Yale University Council on East Asian Studies, Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies, Columbia University Institute for East Asian Studies, Stanford University School of Education, Boston College Center for International Higher Education, George Washington University Graduate School of Education and Human Development, New York University Steinhardt School of Education, Chinese Academy of Social Science, Peking University, Shanghai Jiaotong University, and he is on the Council of the South China University of Science and Technology Center of Higher Education Research.
