Biography

Professor Becky P.Y. Loo has more than 180 research outputs and obtained more than HK$9.3 million and HK$12.0 million of research grants as the Principle Investigator (PI) and PI/Co-investigator respectively. In 2006, she was awarded the Outstanding Young Researcher by the University of Hong Kong. In 2011, she was part of the winning team of the Most Outstanding Community Partnership Award by the Hong Kong SAR Government. Her six General Research Fund (GRF) projects (as PI) obtained funding of over HK$3.8 million. She is on the Editorial Boards of seven major international academic journals, including Asian Geographer (Routledge), International Journal of Shipping and Logistics (Inderscience; ISI Impact Factor/IF: 1.844), International Journal of Sustainable Transportation (Taylor and Francis; IF: 0.951),Journal of Transport Geography (Elsevier; 2011 IF: 2.538), Journal of Urban Technology (Routledge; IF: 0.414), Transportmetrica (Taylor and Francis; IF: 1.062) and Transportation (Springer; IF: 1.023).  Her research interests are transportation and society (particularly sustainable transportation, travel behavioural modelling and road safety), spatial analysis (particularly applied GIS) and information and communication technologies (particularly Internet development, globalization and impacts on society). 

Professor Loo’s teaching philosophy is "Research informs teaching. Teaching inspires research". With this teaching philosophy, she sees University teaching as more than knowledge and skill transfers. It is also a transfer of a researcher’s quest for new knowledge, scientific and logical thinking, and passion to contribute to the scientific community and beyond. She loves interacting with students and inspiring them to aim high. In view of her outstanding teaching achievements, she was awarded the Outstanding Teaching Award 2008 by the University of Hong Kong. She plays an active role in the 3+3+4 education reforms of Hong Kong by advising the Government both on the Junior and Senior Secondary Geography curricula and contributing to the development of the Common Core Curriculum at the University of Hong Kong. She is the Chair of the CDC-HKEAA (One Committee) on Geography (Senior Secondary). At the international level, she is the Vice-Chair of the Committee on Transport and Geography and Honorary Secretary of the Commission of Global Information Society of the International Geographical Union (IGU). In 2012, her PhD graduate, Dr. Winnie Lam, won the prestigious Young Researcher Award of the International Transport Forum, the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) and obtained international recognition for their research on seamless transportation.

Professor Loo is the Deputy Director of the Institute of Transport Studies (ITS) at the University of Hong Kong. She was announced International Vice-President of the Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport International (CILT International) in June 2012. CILT International was established in 1919 and having over 33,000 members working in over 100 countries worldwide. Becky has been Vice-President of the Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport in Hong Kong (CILTHK) since 2008. In 2011, she was appointed by the Chief Executive to serve on the Board of Directors of the Ocean Park Corporation (OPC) and is now a member of Trustee of the Ocean Park Conservation Foundation (OPCF), Hong Kong. In 2012, she was appointed by the Chief Executive to serve on the Air Transport Licensing Authority (ATLA). In addition, Becky serves on the Harbourfront Commission of the Hong Kong SAR Government and is Chair of its Task Force on Kowloon, Tsuen Wan and Kwai Tsing. She also holds various honorary appointments to advise the Government on road safety research and the Qualifications Framework of the logistics industry. Becky has formerly served as Associate Dean (Postgraduate Education) of the Faculty of Social Sciences.
