Biography

Professor Honglin Chen completed his PhD degree in Microbiology from the University of Hong Kong, studying molecular biology of Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) and its role in nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC). He continued his post-doctoral research on EBV at the School of Medicine, Johns Hopkins University. In 2003, Prof. Chen rejoined the Department of Microbiology at the University of Hong Kong, expanding his research focus to include RNA viruses such as emerging influenza viruses and coronaviruses. He has established robust research programs and platform technologies aimed at understanding the molecular determinants of cross-species transmission of avian influenza viruses and coronaviruses, as well as developing vaccines for emerging respiratory viruses. His  work on influenza viruses has resulted in significant publications and the generation of a novel DelNS1 live attenuated influenza viral vector vaccine system. This influenza-based vaccine system has been utilized for developing vaccines for influenza and COVID-19, serving as a vital technology platform for mucosal vaccines targeting other common cold viruses and for pandemic preparedness against future emerging respiratory viral diseases.
