Objectives
1 Develop a novel and systematic perspective on the threefold sources of the European malaise: economic crisis (Eurozone), security challenge (conflict in Ukraine) and refugee crisis. 2 Critically examine the vision of ‘borderless Europe’ by analyzing both its ideological roots and practical limitations. 3 Advance a systematic defense of territoriality and borders as an important dimension of democratic politics in Europe and more generally. 4 Analyze the Europe-Russia relationship and assess the importance of geopolitics. 5 Demonstrate the usefulness of an alternative (if at times more traditional) view on national sovereignty in Europe building on the insights of liberal nationalism. 6 Shed light on Germany’s perceived hegemony in Europe and assess its advantages and pitfalls. 7 Critically engage with some of the dominant theories of European integration, such as federalism, neofunctionalism and liberal intergovernmentalism.
