Biography

Dr Gordon Wong is currently a Clinical Associate Professor in the Department of Anaesthesiology, The University of Hong Kong.  He is also an Assistant Dean (Admissions) of the LKS Faculty of Medicine, an Honorary Associate Professor in the Department of Pharmacology and Pharmacy and an Honorary Consultant at Queen Mary Hospital.  He graduated in 1994 with a MBBS (Hons II) and BSc(Med) from the University of Sydney and obtained his specialist qualifications in Anaesthesiology in 2002.  He worked as a Clinical Fellow at Imperial College London and University of Toronto before joining HKU in 2005, and was promoted to Associate Professor in 2013.  He has published 35 peer-reviewed articles and his research has been related to different areas of perioperative care including pharmacological organ protection against ischaemia reperfusion injury.  He has elucidated several modes and mechanisms by which clinically used opioids can confer protection for the heart and liver during surgery and has shown that the use of the short acting opioids clinically can reduce myocardial damage following cardiac bypass surgery.  He has now shifted his research focus towards the cerebral effects of commonly used anaesthesia agents.  He is currently studying the effect of intravenous agents on neuronal tau protein phosphorylation and piloting studies on using different agents to maintain cognitive performance post anaesthesia.
