Simon Law graduated from the University of Cambridge in England in 1987 with First Class Honors and completed his clinical curriculum at the same university. He received his postg raduate training at the Department of Surgery under the mentorship of Professor John Wong at The University of Hong Kong and then furthered his training in foregut surgery by undertaking a Fellowship with Professor Tom DeMeester at the University of Southern California. He became Clinical Professor in Surgery in 2005. He is currently Cheung Kung-Hai Professor in Gastrointestinal Surgery, and Chief of the Division of Esophageal and Upper Gastrointestinal Surgery at The University of Hong Kong.

Professor Law has concentrated his clinical experience and research in both benign and malignant disorders of the upper gastrointestinal tract, with special emphasis on esophageal and gastric cancers, motility disorders and gastro-esophageal reflux disease. In particular he focuses on various endoscopic diagnostic and treatment techniques on foregut diseases, surgical methods including minimally invasive and robot-assisted surgery, and multimodality treatments of esophageal and gastric cancers.

He served as the Chairman of the General Surgery Board of the College of Surgeons of Hong Kong and the Chief Examiner for the Joint Fellowship Examination of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh and The College of Surgeons of Hong Kong. He is also the past president of the Hong Kong Society of Upper Gastrointestinal Surgeons, and the current Secretary of the Hong Kong China Chapter of the American College of Surgeons. He plays an active role in many international societies, holding positions such as Executive Council Member of the International Society of Digestive Surgery (ISDS), and Asia Representative of the Member Services Committee of the Society for Surgeons of the Alimentary Tract (SSAT).

Professor Law has been a sustained contributor to high-impact international journals. To date he has published over 200 articles, 200 abstracts, and 29 book chapters, including those in Mastery of Surgery, Maingot’s Abdominal Operations, Pearson’s Thoracic and Esophageal Surgery and Shackelford’s Surgery of the Alimentary Tract.
