Biography

Professor Irene Ng is currently the Chair Professor and Head of Department of Pathology in the University of Hong Kong, Li Ka Shing Faculty of Medicine and Loke Yew Professor in Pathology. She is also the Director of the State Key Laboratory for Liver Research.

Professor Ng graduated with an M.B.B.S. degree from the University of Hong Kong. Her research work focuses on the molecular basis in the formation and progression of liver cancer, identification of liver cancer stem cells and characterization of important genes, cell signaling pathways and microRNAs. Her laboratory looks into the major oncogenic signaling pathways in liver cancer and their co-operation and crosstalk. Significantly, she has established useful pathological and biological parameters with prognostic significance for patient management. Her research studies have provided important insight in the understanding of liver cancer development and may help in identifying potential targets for novel cancer therapy. She is prolific in publications, with a total of more than 300 journal publications. She is the ranked the top 1% of most cited scientists in ISI Essential Science Indicators, with H-index of H-index = 60 (Scopus, 2013 Dec) / 58 (ISI Web of Knowledge, 2013 Dec). Her contributions to the fields of liver cancer and hepatitis have been recognized by prestigious awards including the Croucher Senior Medical Research Fellowship from the Croucher Foundation Hong Kong (2005 & 2013).
