AbstractDiscrete materials handling is often performed by pushing or pulling the components to be handled without grasping them in order to save time. A predictor-corrector algorithm has been developed to locate the instantaneous centre of rotation (COR) of a bar being pushed or pulled at any time t. The COR is the point about which the bar canbe considered to be rotating at time t and completely characterizes the motion of the bar. For the algorithm to work, the initiallocation of the COR at t = 0 must be known. This paper presents methods to find the location of the COR at t = 0 and investigates the variation in location of the initial COR with the magnitude of the applied force. The results obtained are to be used in the design of high speed production machines. © 1992.
