AbstractSUMMARY This paper describes a method for automatic determination of parting directions in the computer-aided design (CAD) of moulds and dies. In the presented method, a proposed new algorithm is first applied to find the minimum bounding box of a three-dimensional CAD model. Surface normals from three orthogonal surfaces of the minimum bounding box are then selected as the possible parting directions. Criteria such as undercut and draw, together with the designer's preferences coded as fuzzy weighting factors, are set up for the evaluation of the most promising parting direction. Uncertainty that is assumed to be inherent in the assessments of the ratings and weights is accounted for by the proposed fuzzy heuristic.
