AbstractThe core structures of three-fold 1/2 〈111〉 screw dislocations situated near a mode III crack tip were studied by molecular dynamics simulation using the J2 potential. For dislocations situated a few atomic distances from the crack tip, the core transformation behavior under stress is almost identical to that in the bulk crystal situation except for the presence of Volterra image force. The effective Peierls stress felt by a dislocation ahead of a crack tip, however, is significantly smaller than the bulk value.
