AbstractThis paper considers the problem of determining the optimal number of machines for various machine groups in a manufacturing system. The technique of genetic algorithms is proposed as a means of solving such a problem. A mathematical model is developed to describe the characteristics of the system. The performance of the proposed solution procedure is illustrated by using numerical examples. Indeed, it is shown that the genetic search procedure proposed in this paper is a powerful but simple means of effecting the optimal machine requirements planning in the design of manufacturing systems.
