AbstractFour strains of the heterotrophic dino flag ellate Crypthecodinium cohnii were screened for their docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) production potential using shake flask cultures on Porphyridium medium with glucose (5 g/ L).Of the four strains tested, Crypthecodinium cohnii ATCC 30556 had the highest specific growth rate (0.067/ h), the highest biomass concentration (2.046 g/ L)and the highest DHA yield (159 mg/ L).The screening results showed that C .cohnii ATCC 30556 was the most promising strain for further study and for industrial production of DHA.
