AbstractWe tested an interactionist model of proactive behavior by examining the interactive effects of individuals’ temporal orientations with an organization’s temporal norms on its employees’ intentions to perform proactive behaviors and their actual proactive behavior. We developed and validated a measure of proactive behavior using independent samples. We collected two waves of data from subordinates and one wave of data from the immediate supervisors of these subordinates to test the main model. Results showed that the interaction of individuals’ temporal orientations and the organization’s temporal norms predicted intentions to perform proactive behaviors, which in turn predicted actual proactive behaviors.
