Abstract

At the heart of the narrative of the conflict between the ancient kingdoms of Wu and Yue is the argument over how these events would be commemorated. King Fuchai of Wu wished his generosity in allowing King Goujian of Yue to surrender, and his magnanimity in releasing him from captivity and returning him to power in a much reduced kingdom, to be remembered. This was the perspective of the victors. However, a quite different point of view was held by those they defeated, in which the king of Yue and the people he ruled were treated with unspeakable brutality, and with infinite patience and cunning they rebuilt their kingdom to the point where they could take their revenge. These events, and the competing views of history that they represent, form the basis of this narrative, and therefore it is not surprisin
