AbstractA study of rock mass strength of sedimentary rock in Hong Kong has been carried out in view of the recent development potential in the Northern New Territories. The objective of the study was to appreciate the geological characteristics of sedimentary rock and its rock mass strength. Potential failure mechanism and recommended preliminary rock support measures were discussed. Data has been obtained from published open data by the Government of Hong Kong SAR and project-specific data provided by AECOM Asia Company Ltd. The data has been interpreted on the basis of rock mechanics. It is concluded that underground excavation in sedimentary rocks in Hong Kong is geologically and geotechnically feasible.
