| Abstract | This study explores the adaptive reuse of heritage buildings in Hong Kong, focusing on the
“Heritage Triangle” in the Central District: Central Market, Tai Kwun, and PMQ. Adaptive
reuse is a conservation approach that preserves historical buildings while repurposing them for
modern public needs and fostering cultural continuity.
The research adopts qualitative and quantitative research methods, including case studies,
individual interviews and surveys to evaluate how these adaptive reuse projects address social,
commercial, arts and cultural, and educational needs. Findings reflect that Tai Kwun excels in
integrating arts, culture, and community engagement, while Central Market prioritises retail
and dining but faces challenges balancing commercial, cultural and heritage elements. PMQ
struggles with accessibility and public engagement.
The study highlights the importance of people-centric planning, multi-functionality, and
neighbourhood synergy in adaptive reuse projects. Recommendations include enhancing public
consultation, improving programming and fostering collaborative management among nearby
projects. The research contributes practical insights for future adaptive reuse initiatives and
emphasises the need to align conservation with public needs in Hong Kong’s dynamic urban
landscape.
