Abstract

This paper proposes that the Cantonese artist Su Renshan (1815–c.1849) used histories and origin tales to experiment with markings and images and to create alternate worlds that spoke to themes of belonging. Of particular interest is Su’s highly individualistic ways of interweaving concepts related to calligraphy, religion and local histories of Guangzhou that formed worlds inhabited by communities, sometimes imagined, who are often marginalized in literati art. Overall, by examining the (dis)connective charge between words and images, this paper speculates on how non-conformity was visualized in mid-19th century Guangdong.
