Abstract

Sanitation remains a pressing challenge in rural communities, with many facing inadequate
infrastructure and limited resources. This research aims to address rural sanitation issues in
Zhoushan village, Henan, China, through capacity-building workshops and community-led
solutions. Developed in collaboration with community workers. This study engages local
households, focusing on local, sustainable solutions that are appropriate to villagers’ skills
and income levels. By 2026, the project aims to construct 30 diverse toilet designs in the same
community. This research aligns with multiple Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs),
particularly SDG6 (Clean Water & Sanitation), SDG11 (Sustainable Communities), and SDG3
(Good Health).
