Abstract

This research aims to gain insights into the transformative urban regeneration of the Cheung Sha Wan Industrial Area in Hong Kong, advocating a socially-driven approach to sustainable urban development in the area and emphasising community participation and inclusiveness in the process. The paper also introduced a novel urban design framework that integrates environmental, social and governance (ESG) principles to re-conceptualise this ageing industrial area as a vibrant and inclusive urban centre. The innovation lies in its tailored application of ESG principles, uniquely integrating multi-tiered sustainability strategies to enhance both physical and social infrastructures. In terms of design, the paper emphasises the ways in which enhancing social interaction, enriching place functions and expanding public space are the core of sustainable regeneration. These can be complemented by enhancing connectivity and mixed-use development, which promotes economic diversity while stabilising the social fabric. The design let by research sets a new standard for socially-driven regeneration in Hong Kong's industrial areas and demonstrates the potential for integrating architectural design with strategic urban planning to foster vibrant working communities.
