AbstractThis study delves into the suburbanization process in Shenzhen, a rapidly urbanizing city and a Special Economic Zone of China, positioned uniquely adjacent to Hong Kong. Through a multidisciplinary approach that integrates urban geography, sociology, and economics, the research examines the socio-economic transformations and dynamic land use changes in Shenzhen's suburban areas. Employing quantitative data analysis and qualitative methodologies including interviews with stakeholders and field surveys, this investigation reveals the complex interplay between policy interventions and spatial transformations. By comparing suburban growth in Shenzhen with suburban models in the West, the study highlights unique challenges and formulates strategic recommendations for sustainable suburban development. This comparative analysis not only enriches the global discourse on urban expansion and suburban transformation but also provides actionable insights for policymakers and urban planners engaged in managing cities with similar urban dynamics.
